After reading the comments on the post for a Simple Method of Determining Compatibility, I decided to flesh that out some more. Casey made a point as follows: “after the easy first-attractions are commonplace, what binds you together?”
What I do when presented with the charts of the individuals I’m going to work with is the Shorthand Method: comparing the Sun to Moon, Moon to Sun, Moon to Moon, Mercury to Mercury, Venus to Mars & Mars to Venus by Sign. I’d say 90% of the time that method will lay out the basics of whether the two individuals will get along and what their area of connection is. If there are squares and inconjuncts between the luminaries, the possibility these people will be able to maintain a relationship is not that great. If there are harmonious aspects between the Sun/Moons and the Moons are square, it describes a situation where the two love each other but can’t stand to live in the same space. Mercury aspects can go either way as can the Venus/Mars aspects. The most problematic aspect for Mercury, Venus & Mars is the inconjunct because it one of the most difficult to resolve.
After I look at the synastry using the Shorthand Method, I move on to see how Jupiter, Saturn are in aspect between the charts. Jupiter aspects usually give us clues on how we “like” each other and bring a spirit of generosity. Saturn promotes staying power. Neptune is either going to bring empathy & tolerance with a sprinkling of “Romance” or a trip down the path to la la land. Uranus aspects can be excitement or a relationship that’s over before it even starts. And Pluto, my favorite guy, is all about obsession, sex and power . . .
Occasionally, I have whipped out one of my Shorthand comparisons and didn’t see any of the usual connections and knew the couple had been together for YEARS! Sometimes Saturn will show his hand then but sometimes even Saturn aspects are hard to come by. Then I look to the Moon’s Nodes and the Vertex. Yes, there have been times when this astrologer was dancing around the room because she found the “Connection” between the individuals.
Still, the classic harmonious aspects for synastry - the conjunction, sextile, trine and opposition – are the ones that show up most frequently in my Shorthand Method. But it is just the starting point in looking at how people relate, there are many other places to look further that add richness to the chart comparison and depth to the relationship.

Tseka has requested that I do a post on the Vertex, which I will try to do soon.
Although I consider it a "destiny point," many astrologers look at it mostly in terms of relationships, and some narrow it down even further to the timing of meeting a soul mate.
That certainly was true in the case of the guy I met during the eclipse in 1998. The eclipse was within a few degrees of my natal Pluto and Vertex, and my Vertex is exactly conjunct his Sun. His Vertex is exactly conjunct my Ascendant. Fated meeting, perhaps, but absolutely no synastry, except that we both have Moon in Pisces (his at 6, mine at 11). Otherwise, lots of inconjuncts.
Was he a soul mate? Depends on how you define the term. I'm fairly sure that we knew each other in a past life (parallel universe, whatever). In fact, I know exactly where it was and when, and I have an idea of what the circumstances were.
But we weren't meant to be partners in this incarnation, and the synastry is clear about that.
Very curious.

One of those nice, satisfying astro-puzzles that are so fun to speculate about. I am looking forward to hearing what you have to say on the Vertex/anti-Vertex. A client of mine is interested in more info too. She's a Scorp Sun/Mercury and naturally inclined towards the in-depth look at charts. Personally I'm more inclined to go with Vertex aspects (very small orb, 2 degrees or less).

No hurry on the Verex.
Having shared similar life story to yours i offer up some thoughts about the inconjunt...a bit more esoteric view.
Bernadette Brady says from page 28 Eagle and the Lark:
The Quincunx or Inconjunct 150*
Key principle: moving into a new situation; change; release, letting go.
The quincunx causes change and separation in its mode as a traveler. It walks on stage and stops the play, changes the plot, or moves everybody to a new theater. Change and separation can be expressed in many ways, starting with the ultimate separation of death, traveling, illness, moving house and home, or just isolating yourself because you are studying.
From changing an opinion to breaking up a relationship the quincunx wants you to move in a new situation whether you are ready for it or not.
I have read that the inconjunct is in fact a signature of soul mates. Who else would we trust to move us where we need to go?
My beloved and i share experiences that most cannot imagine, awareness and connection through time and space. Our love is absolute and yet it is very doubtful we will ever share much time together in physical reality. What we have shared has brought huge growth, intense levels of pain and joy and a knowing unbreakable bond. Our sun-sun are inconjunct our moon-moon are inconjunct. But our sun-moons are trine.
How that feels is that we are prevented by some outside force from being together.
And we have experienced some astonishing extremes of recognition from others. Total strangers walking up to us on the street and saying, "I want what you have" or the opposite.
So, after more than 35 years of knowing, we have settled into acceptance of whatever the universe intends. As my beloved says it feels like torture to be separate and yet....
The story of Tristan and Isolde resonates. Some feel it is the greatest tragedy others find a smug happiness that this love is is not allowed expression.
I personally believe that humanity is just now developing the capacity for heart/soul merging. We have long been in a more mundane expression centered in the mental/emotional.
Perhaps that is what the inconjunct is all about; letting go of this limit so we can let in the limitless.
Our sun-sun are inconjunct our moon-moon are inconjunct. But our sun-moons are trine.
How that feels is that we are prevented by some outside force from being together.
After some reflection I am beginning to suspect that we are not meant to spend a lifetime sharing a day to day existence with our soul-mates. The experience is simply too intense to make that a viable option. tseka, at your core, you are an artist/painter/creative soul first & foremost. That kind of commitment requires a great deal of focus and time, does it not? That profound love you share with your beloved fuels your creativity at some level and his absence allows you the time to devote to painting . . . ironic, no?!
Irony and tragedy often walk hand in hand.

Thanks for that excerpt. I've never heard quincunxes explained that way. It sounds like she's talking about transits rather than synastry aspects. But, as always, I love the Aquarian way you synthesize things.
I live for my work, it's true. With my NN on the Midheaven, it's plain as day. But the irony is never lost on me that my work involves relationships, yet I am not ever to have a stable, committed relationship myself. Soul mates, yes, and more than one. I am in the habit of telling my clients and readers who ask about their soul mate, "Careful what you wish for."
So, experience tells me that you might be absolutely right about the inconjunct.
Neith, you're so right about irony and tragedy. I often wonder what it would be like to be blissfully ignorant and in a stable relationship, instead of being driven to think, write, create, and learn endless karmic lessons through temporary relationships.
Yes Pat, i too believe she is talking about transits in that excerpt. I do not have the book but i believe it accurately describes the esoteric pov for the energy| lesson of the inconjunct.
And i would agree with you and Neith that the soul-mate or twin flame connection is something that falls into the category of careful what you wish for if you want a relationship day to day.
~~~
For us these lessons arrived when we were very young; nineteen. We were two psychic babies overwhelmed with delight at finding each other. Traveling all over, exploring, moving day to day in foreign lands or in isolation with our art (he too is an artist/poet) we were fine. When we tried to settle the relationship into something conventional we were completely unsuccessful. The great joy of our being together was blocked. It's similar to a writer's block, the frustration of the flow drying up. Never-the-less we retain some inner knowing and constant awareness of the other and have learned to communicate in ways we mostly call telepathy.
Perhaps because we were so young we didn't try to hold on, inexperience worked for us.
It just is.
Neither of us would deny the yearning for the connection, but i think that is deep in all of us.
I had a long time relationship with a man. Companionable would be the best description it lasted 28 years. Does that tell you he is a Capricorn? We remain friends.
Now, I simply have come to a place in my life where i have a strong desire to live alone. This brings huge peace for me, a place I can merge deeply with the landscape, my bobcat and raven friends. Sometimes i am lost for days, it suits me and is very reminiscent of my childhood on the reservation.
Well, I hear you about this. Anytime I start having thoughts like the above, they vanish when I think of having to share my space. Aquarius (and Rising Aquarius) can't be hemmed in.
Very interesting. Ill have to print out the charts I am intersted in and check it out.
The paradox of Life . . . on one hand, this sounds so good to me but I know if I live alone, I dissolve and fade. Libra Sun, Libra Moon, Gemini North Node says interacting with the "other" is what I'm doing at this time and place. However, it gives me a great sense of satisfaction to know you feel like this, tseka. :-) So glad we have become friends!
welcome to the world of paradox, Pat!! :-) fun, isn't it!
oh yes! you would not believe the hunting and scribbling little astro squiggles that went on after i hit on this method. Went through all the family birthdays i could find and their spouses. :-D
Learned a lot too . . .
On my moms side of the family all the eldest women have gemini/sag either rising or descendant.. I dont know why, but I imagine it has alot to do with how we interact with each other.
Im looking forward to finding more.
Did my italics work??? I'm still trying to get the hang of them.
Ditto, ditto, ditto. I feel the same way as tseka. There is no one I can visualize living with any more. Eve always says she likes living alone but she always ends up with someone living with her. Usually because of her genorosity...but there's always someone living in her house. I couldn't stand that.
I never get bored alone. And for some strange reason, I HATE to clean when someone else is around.
Made soap yesterday. Had to improvise because I didn't have enough coconut oil. Cross fingers it's not too soft. I used my most expensive essential oils -- sandalwood, patchouli, and sassafras. And goat buttermilk.
This is a classic family type of pattern. In our family, we run to Water/Air types with some Fire thrown in. Perhaps in your family, the eldest women were the communicators for the sibling group. fun stuff . . . :-)
HAH! Me too!! Maybe it that Scorpio at work . . . like "don't bug me while I'm working here . . ." Cleaning is serious business for me and I have a plan of action and just want to get it DONE!
That soap sounds yummy. Playing with fragrances is very appealing . . . like I have time for another hobby, NOT!! :-D
This is a comment posted by eme kah from the Pluto in Synasty post and I'm re-posting it here because she has a important point . . .
With a Pluto/Moon opposition, I've found that I often give up my power and let the man run my life precisely bc I'm terrified of becoming one of those overbearing, controlling women (like my grandmother was with me). That doesn't work so well either. It's one of the most difficult aspects too bc it's the linchpin of my chart.
There is no question Pluto/Moon or Hades Moon aspects can dominated our lives in one way or another. A strong Pluto/Scorpio Plutonian emphasis can result in exactly what you are describing here, eme kah - a reluctance to take any action for fear of going too far. It's one of the reasons I keep coming back to finding your neutral point when dealing with Pluto. That and recommending Donna Cunningham's book "Healing Pluto Problems". It can be done!
In my family, we run to the mutables. Big cluster of Pisces, big cluster of Sagitarrius, small cluster of Gemini.
Then for balance, we have some Taurus and Libras.
On my mother's side, everyone is either a mystic, a musician, or a teacher. Or all three at the same time.
I never get bored alone. And for some strange reason, I HATE to clean when someone else is around.
ME TOO!
I absolutely cannot clean when the fam is in the house. Or wont I should say. It irritates me and I feel bound. Odd.
Ahhh...you see I have Moon/Mars conj. in Scorpio. Funny how that manifests. (evil smiley emoticon)
Wow, fascinating.
I am happy, content and productive when alone. So is my spouse. Several times in 25 years we've lived in different cities or states. And yes, the day-to-day routine can be drying. I don't know what our conjuncts or in-conjuncts are, we've thought of one another as soul mates from the git, and we are truly opposites in talent and ways of thinking and experiencing the world.
From the beginning we agreed on.
We didn't have children, didn't have to live on the highway, so to speak. We've been able to take the paths less cleared, first one pursing a dream, then the other. We've moved around the country, change is a constant and there's been precious little financial security for two Cancer moons.
We've battled, laughed, jumped off cliffs together. When we met, he was the brilliant guy getting his doctorate in physics and I was the hippie chick waitress sans any degrees. How 25 years has passed astounds me.
I also don't/won't clean when anyone is around! Cleaning is all about flow! People around mess da flow, man! @;-)
Whoops!
"From the beginning we agreed on autonomy."
No, it hasn't all been roses and cake, plenty of grit in the toes. @;-)
